1.3 The collision of blockchain and artificial intelligence
Compared to the traditional database model, blockchain introduces three new features: decentralized/shared control, immutable/auditable track record, and a native asset/exchange center. These benefits of blockchain give greater scope for the development of artificial intelligence.
The decentralized nature of blockchain encourages the sharing of data sharing between traditional silos: if no single entity can control the infrastructure that stores the data, the resistance to sharing data becomes less. This data sharing may occur inside different departments of an enterprise (private chains), inside a joint ecosystem with multiple participants (federated chains), or across the planet (public chains). Artificial intelligence needs big data, the more data, the better the model, and brand new data may bring brand new models. Shared data will provide more available learning material for AI, resulting in more explanatory models. Immutable/audit-traceable records will lead to data traceability in terms of training test data and models, thus improving the credibility of data and models. High-quality data will train models with reliable explanatory power, while junk data will be detrimental to the training of models. At each step of the process of building the model and running it, the model is timestamped, added to the blockchain database, and digitally signed. When something goes wrong with the model, it is extremely clear why and where the error occurred through blockchain traceability.
Blockchain also provides a decentralized native asset clearinghouse. Not only data resources, but also models trained by data, mobile applications developed based on machine learning models, and idle runtime environments can all realize the flow of value on the blockchain. Specifically, the trained models can be licensed to others to develop intelligent applications, and the developed applications can be licensed to ordinary users to use them. The above features of blockchain will promote the collaboration of different subjects at the resource level and help the AI industry improve productivity in a decentralized mode.
